Motivating yourself for an early workout, when you’re not a morning person

The dreaded 6.00am alarm clock setting, it’s not one many of us looks forward to, but research shows that working out in the morning can enhance your metabolism, improve your physical and mental energy and help you get a better night’s sleep.

So, how do you motivate yourself for an early workout, when you’re not a morning person? We’ve put together our top 5 tips on how to get yourself up and rearing to go without it feeling too much of a challenge.

Tip 1: Get your gym gear ready the night before – Having your clothes out the night before enables you to be prepared and means you don’t have to fumble about trying to find the right active wear.

Tip 2: Get a workout buddy – It sounds simple, but if you have someone that has the same goals as you and is reliant on you going to the same gym class/ fitness session, you’re more likely to go and feel motivated to do so. (Extra tip – if you live within a close distance to each other, it makes sense to car share, as you will definitely feel the need to turn up if someone is relying on a lift from you!)

Tip 3: Put your alarm somewhere you can’t reach it – It’s easy to switch your alarm off when you’re lying comfortably in bed, so put it somewhere you can’t reach it. This will force you to get out of bed to turn it off and once you’re up, you’re up. Why wouldn’t you get dressed and head out to the gym?

Tip 4: Give it time – It’s easy to do it once and feel like it’s not for you. You tell yourself you would rather just wait until you’ve finished work, but will you actually go? Just think, once you’re in a routine of getting up and going, you’ll never debate getting up to go again and your body clock will get used to getting up and being more awake at an earlier time. Research shows that it takes just 21 days to form a habit, so keep this in mind before giving up!

Tip 5: Remember how you’ll feel after it – The endorphins that are triggered during and after a workout will make you and your body feel positive and happier. Setting you up in the right way for the rest of the day!

So, how are you feeling? Ready to set your alarm clock early and get your workout on?
