May 2018: National Walking Month

Tuesday, 1st May 2018

Did you know that May is National Walking Month?

There are so many benefits to walking - it really can help to change your mind, body and health. As well as improving your blood pressure, walking also aids weight loss and burns more fat than a steady jog!

It increases heart rate and circulation, engages ab muscles, builds bone mass and strengthens arms, shoulders and legs – it’s almost a complete body workout!

As little as 10 minutes of walking can make such a difference to your mood and emotion, as endorphins are released, stress, tension, anger, fatigue and confusion are all reduced.

Putting one foot in front of the other can reduce the risk of glaucoma, halves the risk of Alzheimer's disease (over 5 years) and limits the chances of colon cancer in women by a huge 31%!

Walking is a cheap way of keeping fit and if you don’t fancy doing it alone, why not drag a friend along or take a dog to keep you company? Walking groups are also a great way of meeting new people whilst exercising.

And if you fancy a challenge this month, then why not take part in Pendle Leisure Trust’s ‘Your Mile Your Way’ Day or for the more experienced walker, Pendle Leisure Trust’s Three Peaks Challenge. To find out more about these two activities, visit the News section on the Pendle Leisure Trust website or follow these links:

Just 30 minutes of walking five times a week can change your body for the better making you significantly healthier and happier - so what are you waiting for?
