Benefits of Swimming: Strength

Monday, 20th May 2019

There are lots of benefits when it comes to swimming, so throughout this blog series, we’re going to look at what makes this exercise so great!

Swimming is a fun, energising and refreshing exercise… and it’s no secret that it’s really effective too! Swimming engages muscles all over your body, so even just 20 minutes in the pool each day can have a big impact on your overall strength and muscle tone.

Like all exercises, swimming uses different groups of muscles more than others (i.e. arms and shoulders), however, thanks to the nature of the sport, it doesn’t really leave anything out – making it an ideal choice if you’re looking to shape up from head to toe.

One of the most apparent changes you’ll see from regular swimming is an improvement in muscle strength and tone. This is because your muscles are constantly being used when you’re in the pool as you’re using every muscle to propel you through the water.

Swimming is said to be even better for you than running or other aerobic exercises when it comes to shedding the pounds and getting into shape, as your body is constantly working against the resistance of the water (we’ll look at swimming for weight loss in our next blog).

If you’re thinking of taking a dip, we’ve got three pools for you to choose from – West Craven Sports Centre in Barnoldswick, Pendle Leisure Centre in Colne and Pendle Wavelengths in Nelson.
