World Well-being Week 2021

Monday, 21st June 2021

This week is World Well-being Week. But what is well-being? What does it mean? And how can I achieve it?

You may hear the term ‘well-being’ used a lot, especially over the last year. That’s because now, more than ever, it’s important to focus on our own well-being and find ways to improve it. Well-being is the ‘state of being comfortably, happy and healthy’ – mentally and physically.

It’s a subjective matter – we’re all different and we all measure happiness within ourselves in different ways. However, there are things that we can all do to help improve our overall well-being…

In today’s modern world, it’s almost too easy to only connect with people via technology. While social media, WhatsApp and Zoom have helped us throughout the pandemic, it’s no replacement for meeting and chatting to our loved ones in real life. Relationships are important for our well-being, as they provide support, let you share experiences and help give a sense of belonging. With restrictions easing, make time to connect with loved ones – it’ll probably help them too.

Gratitude means to show appreciation and to return kindness. Acts of giving and kindness can help improve your well-being as it gives a sense of reward, a feeling of purpose and helps you connect with others. Whether you take time to support a friend, offer a helping hand to someone or volunteer in the community, there are many ways you can give to others and help make their day, while boosting your own well-being.

We all know that regular exercise can boost your mood as well as improve your physical fitness. Mental and physical health go hand-in-hand. By taking the time to exercise regularly, you’ll find that not only your fitness levels improve, but your mental well-being does too. From the gym to swimming, there are lots of ways you can enjoy exercise. Find what you enjoy and work it into your weekly routine.

Learning new skills or hobbies is a great way to find a little extra purpose in life. Whether it’s crafting, baking, running or writing… they all help you improve your overall well-being. Plus, research has shown that learning new skills can boost your confidence too! If you don’t find you have much time to take on a new hobby, why not incorporate this into your life in other ways. You could learn a new recipe to cook for the family or finally complete that DIY project.

You may be wondering what it means to practice mindfulness. In a nutshell, it means to pay attention to the present moment, whether that’s your thoughts and feelings, your body or the world around you. It’s taking time to pause and appreciate our own world. This state of awareness is often referred to as ‘mindfulness’. It can help you understand yourself better, feel more positive and enjoy life. Taking a little time out every day to practice mindfulness, such as having your morning brew in the garden, is a great way to improve your well-being.

We hope these tips help with improving your well-being and that you have a good World Well-being Week.
