Weightlifting Not Just a 'Bloke thing'

XR2 sessions help to show women that they can lift weights - it is not just for men who want to look muscular.

XR2 is a new concept for Pendle Leisure Trust, a functional facility with a heavy focus on lifting movements - specifically barbell movements - which has seen an influx of females attending the varied sessions.

It’s a myth that weightlifting makes females look bulky, these classes intend to help members build a strong physique, potentially lose body fat and improve their all-round fitness. Of course if a female was wanting to create a muscular physique this can be possible but these sessions are based on the all-round physique.

Resistance training (lifting weights) helps to change your body composition - having more muscle and less body fat increases your basal metabolic rate which means you will burn more calories at rest. You may find your weight on the scales doesn’t change much but inches/body fat lost can be significant.

The XR2 sessions are suitable to both beginners and more experienced participants who want to learn more about the movements in XR2 and who want a really challenging workout in what is a unique environment.

“I absolutely love the XR2 classes and would recommend them to anyone looking to further their strength, fitness and/or endurance. I've found them enjoyable, have learnt new techniques and improved my form in the things I already did, and have been able to incorporate the lessons into my own training. The smaller classes mean that the instructors can really critique our form and give us one on one help and advice when needed, and we all encourage and push each other, which is nice. A massive thank you to all the instructors; they plan the classes to be different and give us new challenges every day. They push and encourage us, whilst also being patient with us and breaking things down further if we need more demonstrations/ better understanding. My only criticism would be that there just aren't enough of these classes to go round! I can see and feel the benefits of XR2 in my training and in myself in general, and think others would too if there were more opportunities to take part.”

The XR2 sessions accommodate both female and male participants and the 3 different type of classes are focused on different elements

Pendle Leisure Centre also boasts a state-of-the-art gym, sports hall and 25m swimming pool which members have full use of.
