How Exercise Benefits you at Work

Friday, 18th October 2019

Regular workouts come with lots of benefits, but did you know it can have a great impact on your work life as well as your overall health and well-being?

Studies have shown over 50% of employers don’t provide their staff with programmes to encourage exercise, with less than 15% of organisations offering subsidised gym memberships.

Although cycle-to-work schemes or discounted gym memberships are often seen as a perk for working for a particular employer, they’re more accessible than you think; wherever you work! Not only are fitness programmes a great staff benefit, they it can help improve work performance too…

Improved productivity - Doing activities with your workmates, like morning yoga or spin classes, can increase productivity and performance. Exercise helps you feel more energised, focussed and motivated, so no more drifting off at your desk or feeling burned out.

Team building - Spending time with your colleagues outside work is an effective way to get to know each other. Group exercise not only improves your fitness, but you’ll build stronger relationships with your colleagues – which will show when you get back to the office.

Happier - It’s said that employees who take part in a workplace wellness programme or regular exercise are more satisfied in their jobs than those who don’t. Being active and healthy doesn’t just mean looking good, it helps you feel better emotionally too.

Less stress - A stressed workforce isn’t a happy workforce. Demanding jobs can be difficult and it’s easy to feel stressed. However, exercise is a great way to release physical and emotional tension - just 30 minutes of exercise can help you feel relaxed.

Fewer sick days - Those who’re physically fit are generally healthier than those who aren’t, meaning they’re less prone to catching that bug that’s been going around the office (which can save the company money in the long run).

Accomplishment – Whether you try a new class or complete a gym challenge, working out can give you a real sense of accomplishment. Setting goals with colleagues not only makes you feel like you’ve achieved something, but it can bring a sense of camaraderie to the office too.

Pendle Leisure Trust has visited a range of businesses around the Burnley and Pendle area, including Daisy Group, Boohoo and Refresco, to provide health checks and demos, as well as chat to staff about activities, corporate memberships and how exercising can improve well-being as well as physical fitness.
