Stress Awareness Week: How Exercise can Ease Stress

Friday, 5th November 2021

When was the last time you went for a run or hit the gym when you felt stressed?

When we’re feeling burnt out, overwhelmed or tense, many of us retreat to the sofa and comfort ourselves with chocolate and re-runs of our favourite sitcoms.

But did you know that exercise can really help when it comes to boosting your mood and banishing that feeling of stress?

Many regular gym-goers, runners or swimmers will testify that exercise is a fantastic way of boosting your mood. That’s because exercise releases endorphins – the hormones reliable for making us feel happy –while simultaneously reducing stress hormones.

Stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, can be kept at bay with regular exercise; which is not only good for your physical health, but your mental health and well-being too.

However you choose to workout, whether it’s fitness classes, swimming or simply going for a walk, maintaining an active lifestyle can not only reduce stress but depression and anxiety as well.

It’s a great confidence booster too.

If constant stress has left you feeling drained and tired and you’ve felt your motivation and self-esteem take a dip, then dig out your gym gear and get moving!
