Pendle Residents Help to Smash Your Mile, Your Way Target

Wednesday, 23rd May 2018

The people of Pendle walked, ran and swam a mile last week as part of the Your Mile, Your Way challenge.

The aim was to get at least 24,901 people throughout Lancashire to complete a mile - the amount it would take to walk around the world!

Your Mile, Your Way is being coordinated by Lancashire County Council as part of its Active Lives and Healthy Weight programme and leisure providers who deliver the programme in each area – including Pendle Leisure Trust’s Up and Active team – took part in the challenge.

Pendle Leisure Trust’s Up and Active Manager, Clive Escreet, said: “We achieved our round the world target – and smashed it! The response from the people of Pendle was amazing. It was great to see so many people getting involved, including all ages and from all walks of life.

On the dedicated day – May 18th – a total of 6,713 children from 30 Pendle primary schools walked a mile; 203 people joined us for our three-park challenge, where, along with Pendle Leisure Trust’s Up and Active team, we pushed a sofa a mile around Alkincoats Park, Boundary Mill, Barrowford Park and Victoria Park, to provide a new spin on the Couch to 5k programme.”

At Pendle Leisure Trust’s centres – Pendle Wavelengths, Nelson, Pendle Leisure Centre, Colne, West Craven Sports Centre, Barnoldswick and Seedhill Athletics and Fitness Centre, Nelson - 1,572 people joined in and pledged a mile during the health week, completing their mile as part of their workout, whether it was in the gym, in the pool or at a class.

There were also scores of other people who did their mile, their way and added to the total. So far, throughout Lancashire, over 33,000 miles have been pledged – and the number is still rising.

Clive added: “This was a fantastic response from the people of Pendle of all ages and from all walks of life. We had children from 30 primary schools doing their bit, we had people in fancy dress and we even had people from the Good Life Project doing their mile by pushing wheelbarrows around the Reedyford Road allotments!

What an achievement making Lancashire the most active place for one day – and let’s hope this is the start of getting more people up and active!
