The Big Build at The Goodlife Project

On Tuesday 29th April, a handful of Pendle Leisure Trust staff had a great time switching up their computers and desks, for trowels and drills for a day of volunteering at The Good Life Project.

Fittingly named The Big Build, together the team were tasked with constructing the decking for a brand new shelter at the Hodge House allotments in Nelson. Our staff also helped with some gardening around the allotments, including planting leeks, kale, pumpkins and tomatoes, as well as the essential jobs of de-weeding and watering the grounds. We even got creative, making wooden signs to label the new plants. The wood for the shelter was kindly supplied by local business Lanlee Supplies Ltd. We also had a generous donation of fresh food from Wellocks to keep our volunteers fuelled for the day. Wellocks were also involved in helping to prep the shelter foundations at The Goodlife Project in one of their corporate volunteering days.

The new shelter was designed to facilitate the opportunity for more community work to be carried out at The Goodlife Project. Currently, the project runs Food Safaris. These are free and educational activities for children aged 5-11 (plus a parent), aiming to teach them how food and plants are grown. From sowing to planting, potting to harvesting and even how to grow your own food at home. Together, the families can explore the allotments, get to know the plants and wildlife, and even take home some goodies at the end.

The Goodlife project also runs a Gardening Club based on their 4 large allotments, complete with polytunnels, greenhouses, vegetable beds, chickens and orchards. The group work together to grow food from seed to harvest, sharing recipe ideas and the produce along the way. There are also weekly free art courses for those looking to improve their well-being through creative outlets. We encourage people to get inspired by the beautiful surroundings and explore painting and drawing techniques with guidance from our professional artist.

We also hope to encourage even more volunteering, including inviting local businesses along to help with the daily tasks involved at the allotments and to offer them a team-building experience away from their usual day at the office.
