Low Intensity, High Effective Exercise For Older Adults

Monday, 4th March 2024

As we get older, it’s normal for our usual exercise routines to start to feel a little harder. Or maybe you’ve never been much of a fitness fanatic but now want to focus on your health due to having more time, recovering from injury, or have the need to proactively manage a health condition. Whatever your reason, exercise can be flexible even if you’re not and doesn’t have to be high-impact to be impactful to you and your goals.

For those that still think the gym is the only way to get fit in 2024, how wrong you are. We believe that this is the year to Do more, Move more, and Be more. And there are definitely more ways than one to achieve success!

Embrace Low-Impact Activities

For those that don’t like the restrictions of a gym-styled facility, great benefits can come from low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, Tai Chi, Pickleball and Pilates. These exercises help improve cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles, and enhance flexibility without putting undue stress on the body.

But if you’ve always been a gym bunny and are now looking for lower-impact alternatives, Feelgood Suites can offer exactly that. A Feelgood Suite offers a welcoming space to use a range of power-assisted machines designed for use by anyone, regardless of age, mobility, or fitness level – and perfect for people recovering from illness or with limited mobility. During a 30-minute circuit that exercises all the major muscle groups, each machine targets specific parts of the body with pilates-style movements. Our suite at Pendle Leisure Centre in Colne is staffed by professional fitness experts and filled with sociable chat and laughter. Our members are aged from 16-80 plus and we offer both mixed and ladies-only sessions.

Find something you enjoy

Exercise doesn't have to feel like a chore. Look for activities that you enjoy and that fit your interests and lifestyle. Whether it's racket sports, dancing, or gardening, doing something you enjoy makes it all the easier to keep going, and consistency is key! For example, walking football is a great way to play your favourite game, without the worry of injury and the fear of keeping up.

Keep it exciting

There are so many ways to keep fit out there, keep it interesting and try new things to keep both your body and mind activated. Pendle Leisure Trust offers Feelgood memberships that give access across the whole of Pendle Leisure Centre including swimming and classes, so that you can enjoy a range of activities to keep you motivated. Why not change up your routine each week? Try Feelgood on Monday, enjoy a swim on Wednesday, and relax into a Friday Pilates class to finish off the week. Your next week could be completely different, trying out new activities for no extra cost.
