Wednesday, 21st March 2018

Primary school pupils in Nelson, Brierfield and Reedley will be able to enjoy free swimming during holiday times – starting this Easter.

Nelson Town Council, with match funding from Nelson Area Committee, and Brierfield Town Council are going to fund the free swimming initiative for children attending primary schools in the three areas.

All 5-11-year-olds who attend schools in Nelson, Brierfield and Reedley will be able to swim for free at Pendle Wavelengths in Nelson, at scheduled times on week days during all school holidays.

The holidays will include this Easter, May Half Term, Summer, October Half Term and next February Half Term.

Chairman of Nelson Area Committee, Councillor Mohammed Ammer, said: “Following on from the huge success of last year’s free swimming for children across Pendle, I’m delighted that, in partnership with Nelson Town Council, we are able to extend the free swimming sessions for children living in Nelson for 2018.

The swimming pools are there to be used and I would encourage Nelson residents to use the excellent facilities provided by Pendle Leisure Trust.”

Chairman of Nelson Town Council, Councillor Zafar Ali, added: "Nelson Town Council is proud to support this very successful initiative. Last year we saw thousands of children from across Pendle enjoy access to free swimming.

Health and well-being amongst children in this part of the country is a massively important subject and we as a Town Council want to do more to promote it."

Councillor Mohammad Hanif, added: “We are delighted to say Brierfield Town Council will be funding free swimming for all 5 to 11 year olds in Brierfield and Reedley.

The health and well-being of our youngsters is very important to us and these free swimming sessions will provide them with confidence in the water.
